A smart home app created using a pre-made brief, full UI and UX work. The brief dictated that the app must include controls for every device, timers, presets, and multiple-choice controls, such as turning off every device in a selected room or floor. The devices that must be included are: lighting, AC, and windows.
The pre-made brief (post-research) was given to me, and I had to plan
out the architecture and design concept of the app based on in.
Requirements:
1. Must have controls for windows, lights, and ACs.
2. Must allow full control of every individual device.
3. Must have the option to turn off an entire room or floor.
4. Must include a timer option.
5. Must include presets.
The research conclusions I was given:
• The most used features are controlling active devices, and turning presets on and off.
• Visual representation of the floor's layout gives the user a more intuitive feel of controlling their home.
• Nice-to-have features might make people gravitate towards one app over another, so think of adding those (music player, favorite devices, etc.)
• Include the most-used features right on the home page (according to the brief- controlling active devices, toggling presets on and off).
• Use a side menu to navigate to a certain floor/ the home page.
• Timers aren't used as often as real-time device control- they can be located under the hamburger menu.
• The floors will have visual representation- not a precise architectural sketch of the floor, but rather a simple layout of the rooms as they are laid out, represented by differently sized rectangles to give a general feel of the size and location. Hallways will be greyed out to avoid confusion, if there aren't any smart appliances are there.
• The nice-to-have features to include: my favorite devices in the side menu (can be set up in settings), a music player which you can connect to a device of choice (can be edited in settings), who's home? -the option of seeing the family's pictures in the menu with a green circle next to whoever's home (the idea: it can be done by setting up the mobile version on the app and allowing location settings, thus allowing anyone who connected their phone to the app to appear home).
